Roger Hobbs: A ghostman is an identity thief geared for criminal organizations. He helps people disappear. No, ghostmen don’t really exist. I created them, as well as the term. But the other criminal terms in I use in the book, such as box man and wheelman, are things from reality. There are two set pieces in the story, one the robbing of an armored car in Atlantic City, the other a bank in Kuala Lumpur. What made you focus on those crimes?

I wanted to play around with old school criminals, and old school armed robbers. Essentially I wanted my characters to be analog players in a digital world. What would a really bank robbery look like in the 2. Major league heists are few and far between but they do take place, as we saw recently in Antwerp.

You’ve also got two ticking clocks: the first when the armored car robbers are waiting to spring into action, and the second involving the ghostman, who has resolve a botched casino robbery in what amounts to 3. Where did you get the idea of using a ticking clock as a dramatic device for raising adrenaline levels?

The ticking clock is a fantastic suspense building device that has been around since time memorial. Modern bank security involves indelible ink packs. In real life, these are big, clunky packs hidden in fake straps of money. They contain ink and a battery that eventually explodes if removed from its power source. They work much like the tags attached to clothing in department stores that ruin the clothing if taken outside the store. Most bank packs work on a ticking mechanism.
That fascinated me, particularly since everything involving a heist revolves around time. When you rob a bank, you have to be in and out within two minutes. Everything is down right to the second. It’s a very precise career. I thought, what a thrill, living literally second to second. Can I put that in a book? Some describe this as a heist thriller. Which of these two heist movies do you prefer: “Heat” or “Ocean’s Eleven?”I’d pick “Heat,” because it is brassy and brazen.
And it’s really a heist thriller, where “Ocean’s Eleven” is really a caper. It’s fun and light- hearted. Ghostman” is more like “Heat.” It’s dark, it’s neon.“Ghostman” is packed with lots of unusual information, such as the dimensions of intermodal shipping containers.
Did you hire a researcher or dig out all this on your own? I did it on my own. I should use a disclaimer.
If you believe everything that I tell you in “Ghostman,” you are a fool. My standard was: is it cool and can I sell it? Does it add something to the story, is it entertaining? And does it have any basis in reality?
The shipping container dimensions are real. But some things I realized wouldn’t really work but I found a way to use them. For example, the federal payload I describe in early chapters is based on a real thing. The technology exists but it’s never been assembled that way. Which crime authors do you read, and which have had the greatest influence on you? Robert Crais, certainly. His easy, affable style and excellent set work was very influential.
And I really love James M. Cain, going back a bit. James Cain could jam ten thousand pages worth of plot into a 1. I admire that efficiency of language. And really like Duane Swiercznski. He always keeps the adrenaline up at 1.
His books are never boring. That’s an admirable trait.
Now that your book is a hit, any thoughts on leaving Portland? I don’t have any plans to leave Portland, at least for a little bit. I love the weather here and the laid back pace of life. I grew up on the East Coast, where everybody is rushing to fight one another to be the best.
Only when I left there did I find your ambition has very little to do with your work ethic. You can still sit down and get everything done in the day without having a panic attack.
